Fly Swap This Weekend and Big Bugs on the Lower D

10TH ANNUAL TROUT BUM FLY SWAP

This Saturday and Sunday come by the shop for the 10th Annual Trout Bum Fly Swap at Fly and Field Outfitters. The event will run from 8am-5pm both days.

The Fly Swap is a huge consignment sale for Central Oregon Anglers. Local fly fishers bring in old and/or unwanted gear, we put a price tag on it, you come and get an incredibly smokin’ deal on something that you actually want! It is the perfect fly-fishing industry synergy. So if you are looking for a piece of equipment, for sure swing by. We will have everything from rods and reels to waders and boots, fly-tying materials, floatation devices, a much more.

And if you’re the angler with a garage full of stuff you haven’t used in years, bring it to the shop and let us turn it in to shop credit or good ol’ US dollars. Whatever we sell your gear for you get in either 100% shop credit or 70% money. So there’s no sense in keeping the unused stuff when you could turn it into something you really want. Just stop by in the next few days and let us do all the work for you. We’ll price your things, catalog and tag and give you a report with everything we have and how much we will try to sell it for. The process is quick and easy and before you know it you just might be shopping for that Nautilus or Galvan reel you’ve been drooling over. Speaking of drooling, please don’t show up before 8am and drool over the used stuff. That’ll just be uncomfortable for you and us!

We’ve already taken in a fly shop worth of stuff and some of it is really good. So this year’s Swap should be a great one. We look forward to seeing you at the shop!

Additionally, Fly and Field will be marking selected in-store items off 30-70% so don’t forget to pop in and look around. You never know what you might find!

SALMON FLIES ON THE DESCHUTES RIVER

Big bugs are working their way up the Lower Deschutes River. Yes, as predicted the Salmon Fly hatch is a week or so ahead of schedule this season. While we are not seeing huge numbers yet, on a recent trip from TROUT CREEK TO MAUPIN we ran into bugs early in the first day. There have been a few spotted in the day stretch from WARM SPRINGS TO TROUT CREEK too. This is a crazy event in the year of a trout on the Lower Deschutes River. They’ve made it through another winter getting by on little bugs and the occasional egg, gotten their spawn on and now they’re hungry! The big bug is just what they need and when it shows up in numbers the fish go kind of nutty for a few weeks. So if you’ve never experienced one of the more legendary stone fly hatches in the world, let us help you to check it out. If you are a DIY-er there are some options whether you have a boat or not. If you’re interested in a proper guided experience it would be our honor and pleasure to take you for a day or two. We have some availability over the next month. For those who haven’t heard, the Bureau of Land Management is not issuing as many Boater’s Passes this year so some of the crowd hassles you’ve probably either heard about or experienced in the past won’t be as bad this year. So give us a call at the shop and we’ll get you out!

The Lower Deschutes is not the only place to run into the Salmon Fly. The Middle and Town Water stretches also have a hatch and it’s getting going now too. While guiding is not allowed on these parts of the river, we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction and set you up with a few bugs. There’s just nothing like seeing a big fish explode on a size 6 dry fly. Get out and see for yourself.
