Central Oregon Lakes Update – August 15, 2025

East Lake is firing on all cylinders. Callibaetis hatches are strong through mid-morning into early afternoon, with another surge at dusk. Under the surface, indicator rigs fishing balanced leeches, Callibaetis nymphs, Red PTs, Damsel nymphs, and Scuds remain reliable. When the wind lays calm, topwater eaters are in play—think adult Damsels and Blue Chubbies skittering along the edges. Mornings also offer good midge action with fine, light-tippet drifts.

Paulina Lake continues to stand out. Balanced leeches, chironomids, Red 2-Bit Hookers, Scuds, and jig-style minnows under indicators are drawing consistent grabs. When fish are keying in on larger prey, stripping Callibaetis or Damsel nymphs across shoals will often trigger aggressive strikes. Calm afternoons call for terrestrials—ants, beetles, and other dry patterns can be surprisingly effective atop the water.

Diamond Lake is drawing anglers targeting tiger and brown trout. This week, streamers like Dark Assassins, articulated leeches, and balanced leeches under indicators are your best bet. Focus your efforts early and late in the day, particularly at drop-offs, creek inlets, and weedy margins where those predators lurk.

Crane Prairie Reservoir remains a worthy destination. Cooler, oxygen-rich water is holding fish in the Quinn and Cultus arms. Indicator rigs loaded with balanced leeches, Damsel nymphs, Callibaetis nymphs, and chironomids continue to deliver. Slow retrieves on intermediate lines are effective for both trout and bass around flooded willows.

Lava Lake is producing a mix of rainbows and brookies through classic summer tactics. Balanced leeches, chironomids, and Callibaetis nymphs are dependable subsurface choices. Early mornings and evenings highlight surface bites—keep a Damsel or terrestrial handy for soft-topwater presentations and be ready to switch to stripped streamers near weed lines for added reach.
