Opening conditions on Crane are excellent. Unfortunately, access is a slightly different story. Access through the Cascades Lake Highway is not possible, they are still working on snow removal up there. If you’re gonna go up there the best way will be South Century Drive, past The Fall River. The only guaranteed access for boats is the Crane Prairie Resort Boat Ramp. Brown Mountain Road is still covered in rather deep snow, getting to the boat ramp will be a challenge. Quinn River Campground is closed, as well as the boat ramp.
Fishing has been outstanding, indicator rigs have been crushing. Chironomid and midge patterns are getting the most attention, along with balanced leeches. It’s probably a bit early for damsel and callibaetis nymphs, but don’t be afraid to give them a shot. We’ve been fishing with 4 or 5x fluorocarbon. Stripping leeches is also a great way to go. It’s always beautiful out there, get out and enjoy the crisp conditions before the heat comes.
