The ODFW will be stocking the Fall more consistently as summer approaches. Many of the fish that stayed in the river for much of the winter has started to spread out, and finding fish may require a little more walking than it has in past months. When you find the fish, continue to use light nymph rig with small flies. Micro mayflies in brown and olive, olive soft hackles, zebra midges in black and red, and palamino midges, all in sizes 18-22 are good patterns to have on hand.
There are still good opportunities to fish dry flies on calm, overcast afternoons. BWO’s continue to be the most prominent hatch and fishing a purple haze or hackle stacker in size 18-22 with an olive emerger or soft hackle dropper is a good strategy to target the fish that are looking towards the surface. Stripping small sculpin patterns, wooly buggers, and leech patterns can still get the attention of larger fish if you feel the itch to throw some streamers!
