There has been decent fishing at the Lava Lakes. We have been seeing good action on the surface and subsurface. This week is going to have temperatures nearly 30 degrees above normal for this time of year. The fish will likely start to move to deep cool water and key into subsurface food sources. Terrestrials will still be on the menu and there may still be a few callibaetis hatches popping off. An opportunistic trout may still look to the surface during extreme heat. Damselfly nymphs will certainly be a good bet, either stripped or under an indicator. Leeches are always good in stillwater. Callibaetis nymphs and chironomids are good choices as well. Fishing during the middle of the day may be very slow. Getting out early or late is a good choice. Remember to stay safe during these extreme temperatures, wear as much sun protection as possible and drink plenty of water. Hopefully this heat will pass and the typical pleasant summer weather will return.
