Lower D Report - 10/2/26
The Lower Deschutes is settling into October with flows dropping back toward 3,600 CFS and good trout fishing throughout the Warm Springs to Maupin section. Recent reports have been encouraging, with productive fishing through riffles, broken current, and softer edges. Nymphing remains a consistent approach throughout the day, while the cooler fall weather continues to bring additional opportunities.
Evening caddis activity remains a highlight, with tan caddis and smaller varieties providing some good surface action. BWOs and smaller mayflies remain part of the mix, particularly during cooler and overcast conditions. October Caddis are becoming increasingly relevant, with larger patterns worth having available as we move further into fall.
Subsurface fishing continues to produce with Perdigons, caddis pupa, stonefly nymphs, and smaller attractor patterns all worth having in the rotation. Leeches and sculpin patterns remain good options, with swinging soft hackles and smaller streamers offering additional opportunities. The Warm Springs to Maupin section remains open for trout fishing, while steelhead angling remains closed.
