Lower Deschutes Report 8/6/21

The Lower Deschutes is fishing well. Hoot owl regulations are still in effect below Sherars Falls. Most of the good fishing can be found above Maupin where the water is cool. Expect the morning and evening to be the most productive times for fishing. Caddis and pale morning duns are still the major hatches. Make sure you’re prepared with PMD nymphs, emergers, cripples, and duns, as well as, different stages of caddis pupa and of course the adults. Swinging for steelhead is very slow right now due to the warm water temperatures and low returns. We’d recommend swinging soft hackles and small sculpin patterns with a switch rod or trout spey until the water gets cooler.

Recommended Dries: Hackle Stacker PMD #14-18, Parachute PMD #14-18, Black or Tan Elk Hair Caddis #12-20, X-Caddis #12-20

Recommended Nymphs: Jimmy Legs #8 Black or Brown, Jigged Hares Ear #14-16, Jigged Pheasant Tail #14-16, Psycho Prince #14-16, Duracell Jig #14-18,  Copper John #14-18, Split Back PMD #18, Olive or Tan Sparkle Pupa #16-18, Nitro Caddis Pupa #16-18
