We love fishing the Metolius this time of year, which can offer some great dry fly fishing on the right days. There are a variety of Mayflies and Caddis around, and pods of fish will key in on them throughout the day. The surface action can be a little sporadic, but when fish are keyed in on the surface the dry fly fishing can be second to none. It’s definitely worth bringing the nymph rod along for when the fish aren’t looking up, as nymphing will still produce the most consistent action throughout the day. We always like to have a large Stonefly pattern on, followed by a Mayfly nymph or Caddis Pupa. Dropping a Caddis Pupa below a dry can produce some exciting action when the It’s a good time to be throwing streamers for Bull Trout as well, so grab the big stick and a heavy sink tip for a chance at hooking into a big Bull.
