Metolius River Update January 17th, 2025

Fishing on the Metolius has been strong, with nymphing proving highly effective. Tan and October Caddis Pupa, small 2-Bit Hookers, and an assortment of eggs, golden stones, Perdigons, and soft hackles are all producing. However, caddis pupae have been particularly hot lately. Afternoon BWO hatches have been hit or miss, but when they happen, they’re worth paying attention to. Be prepared with emergers, cripples, and duns to match the hatch as it unfolds. Little Black Stones are another key hatch. A #16-18 Black Elk Hair Caddis can be a great imitation when fish are sipping on what seems like nothing. Midges will play a big role over the next couple of months. While an adult dry can work, fishing a Zebra Midge deep will often bring more success. Bull Trout remain in the system year-round. While numbers peak in summer and fall as lake-run fish move in to spawn, there are still plenty to target now. They’re feeding on streamers, eggs, Perdigons, and caddis nymphs, just like the resident trout.
