The cool waters of the Metolius can offer some incredible fishing and escape from the hot dry days that are a constant this time of year in Central Oregon. The spring creek characteristics of the Met mean that the water temps are relatively unaffected by the hot dry days of summer, which keep the fish happy and hungry as the warm temps bring out a variety of Caddis, Mayflies, and Golden Stones. There is opportunity to target fish on dries through most of each day, although the action may be variable and it is best to reserve the dry rod for actively rising fish. We still have the nymph rod along as the primary tool for finding fish. A two fly rig with a heavy stonefly nymph trailed by a Caddis pupa or small Mayfly nymph should get the job done. The Bulls from Billy Chinook have started to move into the Metolius, we’re all excited for the increased opportunity to swing or strip big streamers to the big aggressive fish in the next few weeks. Olive or white patterns as big as you can throw tend to be the ticket for finding the big Bulls.
