Guide Chronicles: Ellie's First Bonefish with Scott Cook

The Scott Cook and family take an annual pilgrimage south of the equator to refresh and relax in the sun before the Central Oregon guide season gets under way. Sonya, Scott’s wife saves all year and banks as many airline miles as possible to make this type of trip affordable and an annual priority. This year we travelled to the small town of Akumal, Mexico a couple hours south of Cancun.  The week was filled with ancient Mayan Ruins, fresh waters Cenote’s, fish taco’s with feet in the sand, pool time, and of course some fly fishing. A couple weeks prior to departing for the trip I asked Ellie if she was interested in catching a bonefish. I explained to her the challenges of the casting and that it is more like hunting not fishing. She was on board. We spent the next couple weeks practicing casting with a 7 weight rod on the lawn in the front yard until she was accurately casting about 30 – 40 feet.

A second day of fishing was spent with Papa Glenn working for bones and permit. To get to spend a day with kid and a day with parent is an amazing treat, catching fish no less!
