Trout Bum Fly Swap and Opening Day Fishing Reports

Trout Bum Fly Swap and Opening Day Fishing Reports

TROUT BUM FLY SWAP

Less than two weeks away from our official kick-off event for the new season, the 10th Annual Trout Bum Fly Swap here at Fly and Field Outfitters. The dates are May 9th and 10th. For those of you unfamiliar with this happening, basically it’s a big consignment sale for fly anglers here in Central Oregon. Between May 2nd and 8thbring any unwanted gear to the shop. We will suggest prices for both Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday price will be slightly higher. If we sell your item you will receive 100% of that towards a credit here at Fly and Field. Or you can opt to take 70% in the form of a check. This is the time to turn that unused rod into a new reel, or a bunch of fly-tying materials into some actual flies! We’ve had float tubes and pontoon boats, Spey rods and reels, waders and boots, pretty much everything you need to go fishin’! Hours are from 8am-5pm both days. As excited as we know you all are, please don’t get here at 7 and lurk! We appreciate your enthusiasm but we will be really busy setting up, and fighting you off with an 8wt someone’s trying to sell will only delay us opening. Also, throughout the weekend we will offer 30-70% off selected in-store items. This is an event near and dear to our hearts here at Fly and Field. So please come join us. You never know what you might find.

HOW THE FLY SWAP WORKS

Anytime between Saturday the 2nd and Friday the 8th, bring whatever you’d like to sell to Fly and Field. One of our employees will help to evaluate what the pricing should be. Having been through this process many times, we are well equipped to advise the price that will get your stuff sold. This number will most likely not be what you think you could get on eBay or Craig’s List. We have two days to get it sold and it will be priced as such. We will recommend a Sunday price in the neighborhood of 20-25% less than Saturdays’. We then inventory, tag and stock your item. You will receive a document stating that we have your things and what to do on the eventuality that it either sells or doesn’t. On Saturday morning we set up the tents in our parking lot with all “like” items and go to work selling stuff. We have a process by which all items are categorized and all purchases kept track of. After the weekend we have a folder with every person and item(s) they brought. You come in and find out what you sold. You then have the option of getting 70% of your “earnings” in check or 100% in shop credit. Please feel free to stop by or call with any other questions. 541-318-1616

 OPENING WEEKEND FISHING REPORTS

We hope some of you were able to get out and enjoy the opening weekend. Down on the Lower Deschutes we had boats on the “Day Stretch” both days and can report that some really nice trout were caught. So were the smolt! Lots and lots of smolt. It would appear that the lack of high flows have kept the baby steelhead in the river longer than normal. This year’s crop is a good-looking one. Can’t wait to encounter these fish in four or five years. In between the smolt we caught some slabby “redbands” using a variety of techniques and flies. As usual, the presentation was as important as the fly. Our native trout are pretty tuned in to their environment. Even this early in the season. Respect that, understand the rigs and the presentation techniques, and you will fool trout. It was so good to be back down there, seeing friends, pulling oars, letting the great canyon take us in. What a special place. We are a lucky crew to call it our office. And every trip is an opportunity to share the river with our clients. Let us take you down. Enjoy expert tactics, an awesome streamside lunch, be treated like royalty for a day. It’s a privilege to show you around down there.
