Central Oregon Lakes Update – June 20, 2025

Cooler weather this week should help extend hatch activity and keep trout feeding comfortably throughout the day. Most lakes are fishing well, and timing your sessions around early mornings or evenings continues to be the key.

Hosmer Lake remains a solid choice, with both the upper and lower lakes producing. While fish numbers in the channel are still low, Red PT Jigs, Chromies, and Callibaetis nymphs are getting consistent grabs. Damsels, soft hackles, and leeches should definitely be in the mix. A few Traveling Sedge have been spotted—keep an eye out for potential skittering action on calm evenings.

East Lake is steadily improving. Fish are holding deeper during the day but are cruising the shallows early and late. Scuds and Chironomids continue to be reliable producers, and Callibaetis hatches are ramping up. Fishing the full life cycle—suspending or slowly stripping nymphs near weed beds—is a great way to find active trout. Ants and beetles are also producing when conditions allow for surface eats.

Paulina Lake is fishing more consistently than East right now. Balanced Leeches and Red PTs under indicators are working well, especially near drop-offs and along the shoals. Stripping Damsel nymphs or small baitfish patterns is also getting attention. When the lake lays down, beetles and ants are a great topwater option.

Little Lava Lake has been productive, especially during Callibaetis hatches. Dry fly windows have been solid, and Chironomids—particularly olive and red variations—are a key subsurface food source. Red Holographic Jigs, Spicy Squirrels, and Blood Worms are all moving fish. Expect a good mix of hatchery fish and some quality wild Cranebows and Brookies.

Crane Prairie has been a bit more hit-or-miss, but there are still good fish to be found. The Quinn and Cultus arms are offering the most consistent action. Callibaetis, Damsels, and Chironomids remain the go-to bugs. Dry-dropper setups are still worth throwing, especially with Chubbies up top and 2 Bit Hookers or Black Double Downs below.
