Crane Prairie has started to see an algae bloom. The fishing is still good but you’ll want to get your subsurface flies deep or find areas where the algae is less prevalent. The intense heat this week will likely get the fish moving into the channels where the water is cool. Surface action will probably be less consistent than it has been. Terrestrials and callibaetis always have the potential to fool an opportunistic trout. Over this past week caddis have been hatching in the morning and callibaetis hatches start soon afterwards. Damsels have been coming out in the afternoon. The nymphs are likely going to be very important during the abnormal heat. Callibaetis nymphs have been most productive, but we’ve been seeing evidence of chironomids hatching too. Balanced leeches always have potential and stripping leeches is a great way to cover lots of water. Make sure you’re prepared for the heat this week. Water and sun protection are essential. These temperatures are nearly 30 degrees higher than average, let's hope they don’t stick around too long.
