The Caddis hatch on the Crooked has slowed down a fair amount from what we’ve seen in past weeks. The fish are still keying in on them on the right day when the hatch is strong, but expect nymphing to produce the best numbers of fish in the coming weeks. Flows have stayed steady and the water on the Crooked is relatively low and clear for this time of year. A stealthy approach is key in many areas. Fish are holding where we expect them to, and it is important to stay below them and give a light presentation to avoid spooking them. Focus on pockets around rocks and in boulder gardens, in deep slots and runs, and in the riffles. A lightly weighted set up is ideal, and while getting flies close to the bottom will produce the best numbers, using lighter flies, minimal splitshot, and 5x-6x flouro will avoid unnecessarily spooking fish and lead to more hookups. Keep your eyes open, the clear water makes it possible to do a little sight fishing in the right areas.
