LOWER D REPORT - 10/30/26

The Lower Deschutes continues to offer good fall trout fishing throughout the Warm Springs to Maupin section as October comes to a close. Recent reports have been encouraging, with nymphing and swinging smaller streamers providing some of the more consistent opportunities. Riffles, broken current, and softer edges remain good areas to focus, while changing flows and fall weather make checking conditions before heading out worthwhile. October 31 is the final day for angling access on the Warm Springs Reservation side, while the BLM side remains open for trout fishing through December 31.

The late-fall hatch mix continues to narrow, with BWOs worth watching for during cooler and overcast conditions. October Caddis remain important, with larger adults and pupa still providing opportunities depending on the day. Midges and smaller mayflies are becoming increasingly relevant, while dry-fly fishing remains more localized around eddies, slower seams, and softer edges.

Subsurface fishing continues to produce with Perdigons, Two Bit Hookers, caddis pupa, October Caddis nymphs, and stonefly patterns all worth having in the rotation. Leeches, sculpins, and smaller streamers have been particularly productive, with swinging flies continuing to be a good option through deeper runs and structure. Egg patterns remain relevant with fall spawning activity, so continue to watch carefully for redds and avoid disturbing spawning fish. Steelhead and coho angling remain closed throughout this section through at least December 31.
