Lower Deschutes Update

Lower Deschutes Update

Fishing on the lower has been some classic caddis fishin’, although the hatch during the day is still a little spotty the evening have been fantastic. We got down for a little float after work a couple days ago and had action on top all evening, nothing better than fishing upriver under trees to the slurpers. Back eddies had risers but look for those trees with caddis swarming, the fish were tucked up on the banks eating without discretion! We were also able to swing a few really nice trout at last light, fishing black or tan sculpin patterns can be tough but the payout is bigger and meaner redsides. Use a nine foot 5x leader for the dry and bring plenty of dry shake. A stiffer 5 or 6 weight rod equipped with a sink tip and 1 or 2x fluoro to make a 3 foot leader throws a sculpin the best. Fish it on the swing but don’t be afraid to throw it upstream and strip it fast back or a dead drift. Fishing a 2 fly rig with a mayfly trailed by a caddis pupa is the one for when those bugs aren’t popping, make sure to swing them to the surface after every drift. I have heard of a couple fish being caught at the mouth and jet boat guides are working that stretch, please be aware of water temperatures once the water gets over 68 degrees fahrenheit during the day do not target salmon or steelhead. Fish early to avoid killing fish from exhaustion.
