UPPER DESCHUTES REPORT - 7/17/26

The Upper Deschutes continues to settle into a classic summer pattern, with cool, consistent flows keeping trout active throughout.  Early and late in the day continue to provide the most consistent fishing, while anglers willing to slow their approach around prime holding water are finding quality fish

Caddis remain the most dependable evening hatch, while PMDs continue to provide steady afternoon dry fly opportunities. Terrestrials are beginning to play a larger role, particularly along grassy banks and overhanging vegetation where ants and beetles are finding their way into the river.

Subsurface presentations continue to account for the majority of fish. Olive Perdigons, Hare's Ears, Jig Pheasant Tails, caddis pupa, and Golden Stone nymphs are all producing when drifted through deeper slots and alongside woody structure. For anglers looking for larger fish, swinging or stripping a compact olive streamer around logjams and undercut banks during low-light periods continues to be a productive way to move aggressive browns.
