LOWER DESCHUTES REPORT - 9/11/26
The Lower Deschutes continues to set up nicely for fall, with flows holding around 4,000 CFS and cooler September weather creating good conditions throughout. Following the steelhead closure, this weather makes for a great time to focus on trout.
Caddis remain an important part of the hatch mix, with smaller tan and dark caddis worth having available throughout the day. BWOs and other smaller mayflies should become increasingly important as cooler and cloudier weather settles in. September can provide some excellent dry fly opportunities, particularly around foam lines and softer current when fish begin looking up.
Subsurface fishing remains the most consistent approach with stonefly nymphs, caddis pupa, Perdigons, Pheasant Tails, and smaller attractor patterns all worth having in the rotation. Soft hackles and caddis pupa can also be productive swung through riffles and transition water.
