Crane Prairie Report 6/4/21

Action is getting more consistent on Crane. Insects and the fish should be quite active after the heat wave. Expect the action to slow as temperatures cool down. Indicator rigs are the way to go. Word has it that the fish are super keyed into callibaetis nymphs. Balanced leeches are always good to tie on, sometimes it helps bring attention to smaller nymphs on your rig. Chironomids are always a good choice as well, fish may look for these in cooler weather. Think about damsels now that we’re getting close to summer. Stripping flies can be really fun out there. Leeches and damsels are the way to go for stripping. No large emergences of callibaetis quite yet, so your primary dry flies should be beetles, ants and other terrestrial patterns. This may be the last cool weather until late August, so if you don’t like the heat now is your time.
