Action on the Crooked River is getting good. The fish have had some time to adjust to the low flows (50 CFS). Stealth is your friend when the water is so skinny. The weather this week should be mild compared to the last week with only a handful of rainy days. The hatches are predominantly midges and blue wing olives, there may still be a caddis here and there. Size 16 - 22 is a good size range for BWOs, the larger ones are likely to be around. Nymphing revolves around the hatches, midges, and BWO nymphs. Red midges work well on the Crooked, as do red two-bits. Scuds are also a good late-season nymph. Not many people use streamers on the crooked but it’s not a terrible idea, especially around this time of year. If you want to find some feisty redbands and get out of the rain, head out to the Crooked.
