With temperatures dropping and fall weather on its way in we tend to see the fish start to move up and down the river, spreading out from just the hatchery. Going down below the falls will get you away from people but you’ll find fewer opportunities as the fish are spooky and scattered. Walking up from the campground would be my move, I have heard of some good numbers up higher near the headwaters. The hatchs have been consistent the last couple of days, we have seen a bunch of different baitis and PMDs as well as some stones and caddis. Fish a small olive or gray mayfly pattern tied on 5x to actively feeding fish, you can tie a dropper off the back but make sure it is light enough as to not to sink your dry. You can also try a small chubby Chernobyl or stimulator with a wet fly dropper, the bigger dry means bigger and heavier nymphs can be fished below it.
When the hatch gets slow nymphing has been deadly effective, we are still running a lot of jigged euro style flies paired with a small red or black midge under an indicator with a little split shot when necessary. Fall can be a great time to strip some larger bugs as well, woolly buggers and rabbit leeches are two of my favorites when fished next to logs and cut banks. Autumn is an awesome time to be on the water and with the crowds starting to taper down the fall will be a good bet for the next couple of weeks.
