Lava Lakes Report 6/11/21

The Lava Lakes are fishing well. There have been some excellent fish pulled out of both lakes. The transition from abnormally hot weather to cooler than average weather makes things difficult to predict. From what we can tell, the hot weather got damsels hatching but the cool weather put an end to that. The nymphs will still be around but may be less prominent. Callibaetis nymphs have been hot on most stillwater fisheries as of late. Chironomids are also a great bet, size 14 - 16 is a good starting point. Once things start to warm back up size up to 12’s. Make sure you’re stocked up on balanced leeches, the fish are always interested in a big juicy meal. Stripping leeches and small streamer patterns is a great way to search for fish, especially in shallower areas and off banks. In the cloudy weather there may be some decent callibaetis hatches, so it may pay off to be prepared with those. Terrestrials are the most consistent dry fly for lake fishing. We’ve got some great cool and rainy days ahead of us. A cool wet June can go a long way towards preventing wildfires.
