LOWER DESCHUTES REPORT - 10/9/26
The Lower Deschutes continues to offer good trout fishing as we move further into October, with flows holding relatively steady around 3,600 CFS. Riffles, broken current, and softer edges remain productive areas to focus, while the cooler fall mornings and warmer afternoons are providing a variety of opportunities throughout the Warm Springs to Maupin section.
Caddis remain an important part of the mix, with tan and smaller gray varieties continuing to provide dry-fly opportunities, particularly during warmer evenings. BWOs are increasingly worth watching for during cooler and overcast conditions, while PMDs and smaller mayflies remain part of the mix. October Caddis are becoming more relevant, with larger adults and pupa worth having available as we move through the month.
Subsurface fishing remains the most consistent approach, with Perdigons, caddis pupa, stonefly nymphs, Two Bit Hookers, and smaller attractor patterns all worth having in the rotation. Egg patterns are becoming increasingly important with fall spawning activity, while leeches, sculpins, and smaller streamers continue to be good options around deeper runs and structure. The Warm Springs to Maupin section remains open for trout fishing, while steelhead angling remains closed.
