Lower Deschutes Report 7/30/21

The Lower Deschutes has been fishing well. Downstream of Maupin has some really hot water temperatures and the hoot owl regulations are still in effect below Sherars Falls. Check the myodfw website for any updates. Caddis and pale morning duns are the predominant hatches right now. The hatches are best before or after the hottest part of the day. Caddis pupa and PMD nymphs are productive. I probably sound like a broken record, but hatches during midsummer stay very consistent. If you’re bored of fishing caddis and PMD patterns, you could get deep with some stonefly nymphs or swing around with various soft hackle patterns. Put a sculpin pattern on a trout spey set up and you may get a grab from a big predatory redside. Steelhead numbers are still really low. An early start to fall would help a lot to cool down the water temperatures. Let’s all hope for rain, cool temperatures, and a winter that makes us miss the heat dome.
