Metolius River Update April 11th, 2025

Spring is pushing things forward on the Metolius, and while it’s still early for Green Drakes, there have been some surprisingly premature sightings. While it's far from prime time, don’t completely overlook the pattern. A Green Drake dry might raise interest in the afternoons, though you’ll have better luck prospecting with a Green Drake nymph.

Blue-Winged Olives continue to be the most consistent hatch this week, with good numbers of emergers, duns, and occasional spinner falls. Keep an eye out for caddis as well — Tan X Caddis and orange-bodied Elk Hair or Stimulators are good bets. Matching subsurface caddis patterns is also a productive move.

Bull trout fishing is turning on. Large streamers are getting the job done as flows settle and clarity improves.

For nymphing, stay versatile. Golden Stones, Drake nymphs, Perdigons, Eggs, Frenchies, 2-Bits, and Micro Mayflies are all worth cycling through.
