Metolius River Update February 7th, 2025

Nymphing on the Metolius has been effective this week, with several flies producing results. For success, consider using Perdigons, Zebra Midges, and Golden Stones, but don’t overlook options like Micro Mayflies and 2 Bit Hookers as well. As winter shifts into late stages, we’re seeing more mature nymphs starting to drift, so February is a great time to be on the river. The longer days bring more light, encouraging insect activity and making it easier for fish to feed.

When it comes to dry fly fishing, the action has been inconsistent. We’ve seen some days with solid rises and others where the fish seemed less active. While it’s tempting to think that warm, sunny days signal ideal dry fly conditions, the truth is that winter hatches thrive best in cooler, wetter weather. The best chances often come under cloudy skies, especially around mid-afternoon when the fish seem most willing to rise.

For Bull Trout, fishing has been good, especially with larger streamers or leeches fished under an indicator but they will still eat what the rainbows are going after too. DOnt go out there under-gunned!
