Midges, midges, midges. That’s really the name of the game on Fall River this week. Fish are keyed in on them all day long—especially olive, black, and purple variations. Zebra Midges, small soft hackle emergers, and tiny tungsten midges in sizes 18–22 are getting it done when nothing else moves fish.
That said, we’re seeing solid PMD and Caddis hatches going off mid-day into evening, especially on warmer afternoons. But if things feel quiet up top, trust that fish are feeding subsurface on midges. Purple midges and purple emergers specifically have been a standout lately—several folks from the shop and customers have mentioned that’s been the color to beat.
Long leaders, light tippet, and a patient drift are key. Expect a mix of hatchery fish and some nice holdovers if you put in the time. It’s classic summer on Fall right now—technical and consistent if you stay dialed.
