Reports from the Lower Deschutes have been a bit sparse lately, as there haven’t been many anglers out. Snow seems to have melted with the warmer weather, but access is still tricky, and we’re not hearing a lot of feedback just yet. That said, this stretch still holds plenty of potential. Nymphing remains a solid bet, especially with tungsten flies to reach those deeper runs. Stoneflies and eggs are always a good call if you’re heading out.
For those chasing steelhead, swinging flies can be an exciting option. Classic patterns like Intruders and Hoh Bo Speys are great choices. Be sure to use a sink tip to get your fly down in the colder water, and focus on longer, steady swings to draw a strike. With steelhead season still open through December, it’s worth braving the conditions for a shot at these iconic fish.
