The Metolius has continued to fish well, big nymphs are finding good numbers of fish as are Pheasant Tails, Hare’s Ears, and similar variations in the #14-18 range. The cooler weather has resulted in a little less insect activity than we’ve been seeing, but there are still plenty of fish that will look to the surface throughout the day for a BWO or small Caddis. Look for BWOs and other Mayflies to become the primary hatches as we start to see more in the way of winter-type weather, and have a well-stocked selection of Mayfly patterns to provide the best chances for those wanting to fish dries.
There are great numbers of Bull Trout in the system, and success often depends on getting a big streamer deep enough and into the zone of a fish that is in the mood to smack a fly. Confidence and persistence are key for getting into these big fish, expect a lot of refusals and stubborn fish before everything comes together.
